1 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρὸς Ιερεμιαν δεύτερον καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἔτι δεδεμένος ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ τῆς φυλακῆς λέγων 2 οὕτως εἶπεν κύριος ποιῶν γῆν καὶ πλάσσων αὐτὴν τοῦ ἀνορθῶσαι αὐτήν κύριος ὄνομα αὐτῷ 3 κέκραξον πρός με καὶ ἀποκριθήσομαί σοι καὶ ἀπαγγελῶ σοι μεγάλα καὶ ἰσχυρά ἃ οὐκ ἔγνως αὐτά 4 ὅτι οὕτως εἶπεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ περὶ οἴκων τῆς πόλεως ταύτης καὶ περὶ οἴκων βασιλέως Ιουδα τῶν καθῃρημένων εἰς χάρακας καὶ προμαχῶνας 5 τοῦ μάχεσθαι πρὸς τοὺς Χαλδαίους καὶ πληρῶσαι αὐτὴν τῶν νεκρῶν τῶν ἀνθρώπων οὓς ἐπάταξα ἐν ὀργῇ μου καὶ ἐν θυμῷ μου καὶ ἀπέστρεψα τὸ πρόσωπόν μου ἀ{P'} αὐτῶν περὶ πασῶν τῶν πονηριῶν αὐτῶν 1 Jeremias was still confined to his prison in the court when the word of the Lord came to him a second time. 2 It ran: Thus says the Lord, that all this will do, all this will devise and determine, so great is his name: 3 Cry out to me still, and thou shalt find audience; great mysteries that lie beyond thy ken I will make known to thee. 4 Ruined houses of Jerusalem, ruined palace of the kings of Juda, what has the Lord to tell thee about these? …

… to siege and sword. 5 Come they to fight against the Chaldaeans, it is but to strew those earthworks with their own dead bodies; in anger and scorn I will smite them down, turning my back on the city they have stained with such guilt …[1]

Dominus nomen ejus:
3
Clama ad me, et exaudiam te,
et annuntiabo tibi grandia et firma quæ nescis.
4
5
venientium ut dimicent cum Chaldæis,
et impleant eas cadaveribus hominum
quos percussi in furore meo et in indignatione mea,
abscondens faciem meam a civitate hac,
propter omnem malitiam eorum:
7 The fortunes of Juda and Jerusalem I will reverse, and they shall be established as firmly as ever; 8 all the guilt that offends me purged away, all the wrong and despite they did me forgiven. 9 My pride and prize, my renown and triumph, to be their benefactor, so that all the world shall hear of it; everywhere the tale of my bounty and my blessing shall strike awe and dread into men’s hearts. 10 Where all seems to your eyes but a desert, man nor beast left in the townships of Juda and in Jerusalem, empty street, empty house, empty byre, 11 there, says the Lord, you shall hear cries of joy and mirth, voice of bridegroom and voice of bride. There you shall hear men singing, Give thanks to the Lord, the Lord is gracious, his mercy endures for ever, as they bring to his temple the offerings they have vowed. Your country’s doom shall be reversed, says the divine promise, and all shall be as of old. 12 Juda and all its townships a desert, no living thing to dwell there? Nay, says the Lord of hosts, once again it shall be the abode of shepherds, a resting-place for their flocks. 13 By hill and plain and the uplands of the south, all over Benjamin and round about Jerusalem, all through the cities of Juda, there shall be flocks passing to and fro, and their masters a-counting them, the Lord says. 6
Ecce ego obducam eis cicatricem et sanitatem,
et curabo eos, et revelabo illis deprecationem pacis et veritatis.
7
Et convertam conversionem Juda et conversionem Jerusalem,
et ædificabo eos sicut a principio.
8
Et emundabo illos ab omni iniquitate sua
in qua peccaverunt mihi,
et propitius ero cunctis iniquitatibus eorum,
in quibus dereliquerunt mihi et spreverunt me.
9
10
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Adhuc audietur in loco isto
quem vos dicitis esse desertum,
eo quod non sit homo nec jumentum
in civitatibus Juda, et foris Jerusalem,
quæ desolatæ sunt, absque homine,
et absque habitatore, et absque pecore,
11
vox gaudii et vox lætitiæ,
vox sponsi et vox sponsæ,
vox dicentium: Confitemini Domino exercituum,
quoniam bonus Dominus,
quoniam in æternum misericordia ejus:
et portantium vota in domum Domini:
reducam enim conversionem terræ
sicut a principio, dicit Dominus.
12
Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:
Adhuc erit in loco isto deserto,
absque homine et absque jumento,
et in cunctis civitatibus ejus,
habitaculum pastorum accubantium gregum.
13
In civitatibus montuosis,
et in civitatibus campestribus,
et in civitatibus quæ ad austrum sunt,
et in terra Benjamin, et in circuitu Jerusalem,
et in civitatibus Juda,
adhuc transibunt greges ad manum numerantis, ait Dominus.
14 15 16 17 18 14 Behold, he says, a time is coming when I will make good my promise to Israel and Juda; 15 the day will dawn, the time be ripe at last for that faithful scion to bud from David’s stock; the land shall have a king to reign over it, giving just sentence and due award. 16 When that time comes, Juda shall find deliverance, none shall disturb Jerusalem’s rest; and the name given to this king shall be, The Lord vindicates us.[2] 17 Never a man wanting of David’s line, the Lord says, to sit on Israel’s throne; 18 never a lack of priest and Levite to wait upon me, bring me burnt-sacrifice and burn the bloodless offering, and slaughter victims, day after day. 14

Ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus,
et suscitabo verbum bonum quod locutus sum
ad domum Israël et ad domum Juda.
15
In diebus illis et in tempore illo
germinare faciam David germen justitiæ,
et faciet judicium et justitiam in terra:
16
in diebus illis salvabitur Juda,
et Jerusalem habitabit confidenter:
et hoc est nomen quod vocabunt eum:
Dominus justus noster.
17
19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 19 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, 20 giving him this message: If you can rescind my ordinance of day and night, that there should be day-time and night-time no more, 21 only then will I rescind the privilege granted to my servant David, and there shall be heirs of his throne no more, Levites and priests to wait on me no more. 22 My servant David, the Levites that wait on me, these shall have a posterity countless as the stars of heaven, measureless as the sea-sand. 23 This message, too, Jeremias had from the Lord: 24 Mark well how they declare, the folk among whom thou dwellest,[3] that there are two families[4] the Lord has chosen, and both he has cast off; so that they despise my own people, and no longer count it a nation. 25 But this is the divine answer: Laws if I have made none for day and night, for heaven and earth no ordinances prescribed, 26 then let it be thought that I mean to cast Israel away, or depose the line of David from its headship over all who spring from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Trust me, their doom shall be reversed, their lot shall be pitied.

22
Sicuti enumerari non possunt stellæ cæli,
et metiri arena maris,
sic multiplicabo semen David servi mei,

25
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Si pactum meum inter diem et noctem,
et leges cælo et terræ non posui,
26
equidem et semen Jacob et David servi mei projiciam,
ut non assumam de semine ejus
principes seminis Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob:
reducam enim conversionem eorum, et miserebor eis.
