Knox Bible Ad

1 2 3 4 1 Not more indelible were the guilt of Juda, if pen of steel or point of diamond had graven it with their hearts for tablet, or upon the rim of their altars; 2 indelible, while there are sons of theirs to remember where altar stood once and sacred tree, shrine in the thick forest, shrine on the high hills; 3 to offer sacrifice even yet in the open country-side. All the riches and treasures of thy land shall be destroyed, all its hill-shrines,[1] in punishment for all its guilt. 4 Lost to thee, the home that once I gave thee; in a land thou knowest not thou shalt be the slave of thy enemies; the fire of anger thou hast kindled in me can never be quenched. 1

Peccatum Juda scriptum est stylo ferreo
in ungue adamantino,
exaratum super latitudinem cordis eorum,
et in cornibus ararum eorum.
2
Cum recordati fuerint filii eorum ararum suarum,
et lucorum suorum,
lignorumque frondentium,
in montibus excelsis,
3
sacrificantes in agro:
fortitudinem tuam, et omnes thesauros tuos in direptionem dabo;
excelsa tua propter peccata in universis finibus tuis.
4
quoniam ignem succendisti in furore meo:
usque in æternum ardebit.
5 ἐπικατάρατος ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὃς τὴν ἐλπίδα ἔχει ἐ{P'} ἄνθρωπον καὶ στηρίσει σάρκα βραχίονος αὐτοῦ ἐ{P'} αὐτόν καὶ ἀπὸ κυρίου ἀποστῇ ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ 6 καὶ ἔσται ὡς ἡ ἀγριομυρίκη ἡ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ οὐκ ὄψεται ὅταν ἔλθῃ τὰ ἀγαθά καὶ κατασκηνώσει ἐν ἁλίμοις καὶ ἐν ἐρήμῳ ἐν γῇ ἁλμυρᾷ ἥτις οὐ κατοικεῖται 7 καὶ εὐλογημένος ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὃς πέποιθεν ἐπὶ τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ ἔσται κύριος ἐλπὶς αὐτοῦ 8 καὶ ἔσται ὡς ξύλον εὐθηνοῦν πα{R'} ὕδατα καὶ ἐπὶ ἰκμάδα βαλεῖ ῥίζας αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ φοβηθήσεται ὅταν ἔλθῃ καῦμα καὶ ἔσται ἐ{P'} αὐτῷ στελέχη ἀλσώδη ἐν ἐνιαυτῷ ἀβροχίας οὐ φοβηθήσεται καὶ οὐ διαλείψει ποιῶν καρπόν 5 Cursed shall he be, the Lord says, that puts his trust in man, and will have flesh and blood to aid him, his thoughts far from God. 6 Never shall the sight of better times greet him; forlorn as some bush of tamarisk out in the desert, he dwells in a parched waste, the salt plains for all his company. 7 Blessed shall he be that puts his trust in the Lord, makes the Lord his refuge. 8 Not more favoured is tree planted by the water’s edge, that pushes out its roots to catch the moisture, and defies the summer heat; its green leaves careless of the drought, its fruit unfailing. 5

Hæc dicit Dominus:
Maledictus homo qui confidit in homine,
et ponit carnem brachium suum,
et a Domino recedit cor ejus.
6
Erit enim quasi myricæ in deserto,
et non videbit cum venerit bonum:
sed habitabit in siccitate in deserto,
in terra salsuginis et inhabitabili.
7
Benedictus vir qui confidit in Domino,
et erit Dominus fiducia ejus.
8
9 βαθεῖα ἡ καρδία παρὰ πάντα καὶ ἄνθρωπός ἐστιν καὶ τίς γνώσεται αὐτόν 10 ἐγὼ κύριος ἐτάζων καρδίας καὶ δοκιμάζων νεφροὺς τοῦ δοῦναι ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ κατὰ τοὺς καρποὺς τῶν ἐπιτηδευμάτων αὐτοῦ 11 ἐφώνησεν πέρδιξ συνήγαγεν ἃ οὐκ ἔτεκεν ποιῶν πλοῦτον αὐτοῦ οὐ μετὰ κρίσεως ἐν ἡμίσει ἡμερῶν αὐτοῦ ἐγκαταλείψουσιν αὐτόν καὶ ἐ{P'} ἐσχάτων αὐτοῦ ἔσται ἄφρων 9 There is no riddle like the twists of the heart; who shall master them?[2] 10 Who but I, the Lord, that can see into man’s heart, and read his inmost thoughts, to every life awarding what its doings have earned? 11 Partridge that fosters a brood not its own is fit emblem for the man that wins riches unjustly; when life is but half done, he must take leave of them, a fool to the last. 9
Pravum est cor omnium, et inscrutabile:
quis cognoscet illud?
10
Ego Dominus scrutans cor,
et probans renes:
qui do unicuique juxta viam suam,
et juxta fructum adinventionum suarum.
11
Perdix fovit quæ non peperit:
fecit divitias, et non in judicio:
in dimidio dierum suorum derelinquet eas,
et in novissimo suo erit insipiens.
12 θρόνος δόξης ὑψωμένος ἁγίασμα ἡμῶν 13 ὑπομονὴ Ισραηλ κύριε πάντες οἱ καταλιπόντες σε καταισχυνθήτωσαν ἀφεστηκότες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς γραφήτωσαν ὅτι ἐγκατέλιπον πηγὴν ζωῆς τὸν κύριον 14 ἴασαί με κύριε καὶ ἰαθήσομαι σῶσόν με καὶ σωθήσομαι ὅτι καύχημά μου σὺ εἶ 15 ἰδοὺ αὐτοὶ λέγουσι πρός με ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ λόγος κυρίου ἐλθάτω 16 ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ ἐκοπίασα κατακολουθῶν ὀπίσω σου καὶ ἡμέραν ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἐπεθύμησα σὺ ἐπίστῃ τὰ ἐκπορευόμενα διὰ τῶν χειλέων μου πρὸ προσώπου σού ἐστιν 17 μὴ γενηθῇς μοι εἰς ἀλλοτρίωσιν φειδόμενός μου ἐν ἡμέρᾳ πονηρᾷ 18 καταισχυνθήτωσαν οἱ διώκοντές με καὶ μὴ καταισχυνθείην ἐγώ πτοηθείησαν αὐτοί καὶ μὴ πτοηθείην ἐγώ ἐπάγαγε ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς ἡμέραν πονηράν δισσὸν σύντριμμα σύντριψον αὐτούς 12 Where from the first supreme majesty sits enthroned, there lies our sanctuary; 13 thou, Lord, art Israel’s hope; the men who forsake thee will be disappointed, the men who swerve from thy paths will be names written in sand; have they not forsaken that Lord who is the fountain of living water? 14 If I am to be healed, it is thou, Lord, must heal me; if I am to find deliverance, it is thou must deliver me; thou art all my boast. 15 What has become of the Lord’s threat? (so men taunt me), we are waiting to see it accomplished! 16 But this was no hasty word of mine, I did but lead where thou leddest; it was no wish of mine that calamity should befall mankind;[3] no word I uttered but had the warrant of thy scrutiny. 17 Not for me thy terrors; the day of affliction is coming, but I shall find refuge in thee. 18 They must be abashed, and I vindicated; they must cower, while I stand confident. It is on them the day of affliction will fall; reward them, then, with twofold hurt for the hurt they did. 12
Solium gloriæ altitudinis a principio,
locus sanctificationis nostræ.
13
Exspectatio Israël, Domine,
omnes qui te derelinquunt confundentur:
recedentes a te, in terra scribentur,
quoniam dereliquerunt venam aquarum viventium Dominum.
14
Sana me, Domine, et sanabor:
salvum me fac, et salvus ero:
quoniam laus mea tu es.
15
Ecce ipsi dicunt ad me:
Ubi est verbum Domini? veniat:
16
17
Non sis tu mihi formidini:
spes mea tu in die afflictionis.
18
Confundantur qui me persequuntur,
et non confundar ego:
paveant illi,
et non paveam ego:
induc super eos diem afflictionis,
et duplici contritione contere eos.
20 This was to be my message from the Lord to king and people of Juda, to every citizen of Jerusalem that used those gates: 21 No more, on peril of your lives, shoulder those packs of yours and carry them through Jerusalem gates on the sabbath day. 22 Never a load must leave your houses, nor any work be done, on the sabbath; this was the command I gave to your fathers, 23 only they would not listen or pay heed, chafed under the yoke of discipline and refused to obey me. 24 And you, the Lord says, will you obey? Rid these gateways of their sabbath burdens, keep the sabbath holy by resting from work, 25 and your kings and princes, David’s own heirs, shall still go riding through them, with horses and chariots, with their retinue of nobles, with the men of Juda and Jerusalem’s citizens in their train. Evermore your city shall be populous; 26 from the townships of Juda, from your own country-side, from Benjamin, from plain and hill and the waste lands of the south, men shall come with burnt-sacrifice and victim and bloodless offering and incense to enrich the Lord’s temple. 27 Refuse to keep the sabbath holy, profane it with burdens borne and burdens admitted through the gates, and I will set those gates in a blaze that shall burn down all Jerusalem ere you can quench it. 19 Hæc dicit Dominus ad me: Vade, et sta in porta filiorum populi, per quam ingrediuntur reges Juda, et egrediuntur, et in cunctis portis Jerusalem: 20 et dices ad eos:

Audite verbum Domini,
reges Juda, et omnis Juda,
cunctique habitatores Jerusalem,
qui ingredimini per portas istas.
21
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Custodite animas vestras,
et nolite portare pondera in die sabbati,
nec inferatis per portas Jerusalem:
22
et nolite ejicere onera de domibus vestris in die sabbati,
et omne opus non facietis:
sanctificate diem sabbati,
sicut præcepi patribus vestris.
23
Et non audierunt, nec inclinaverunt aurem suam:
sed induraverunt cervicem suam, ne audirent me,
et ne acciperent disciplinam.
24
ne faciatis in eo omne opus:
25
sedentes super solium David,
et ascendentes in curribus et equis,
ipsi et principes eorum,
viri Juda, et habitatores Jerusalem:
et habitabitur civitas hæc in sempiternum.
26
27
Si autem non audieritis me
ut sanctificetis diem sabbati,
et ne portetis onus,
et ne inferatis per portas Jerusalem in die sabbati,
succendam ignem in portis ejus,
et devorabit domos Jerusalem,
et non extinguetur.
