1 καὶ σὺ μὴ λάβῃς γυναῖκα λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ 2 καὶ οὐ γεννηθήσεταί σοι υἱὸς οὐδὲ θυγάτηρ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ 3 ὅτι τάδε λέγει κύριος περὶ τῶν υἱῶν καὶ περὶ τῶν θυγατέρων τῶν γεννωμένων ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ καὶ περὶ τῶν μητέρων αὐτῶν τῶν τετοκυιῶν αὐτοὺς καὶ περὶ τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν τῶν γεγεννηκότων αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ γῇ ταύτῃ 4 ἐν θανάτῳ νοσερῷ ἀποθανοῦνται οὐ κοπήσονται καὶ οὐ ταφήσονται εἰς παράδειγμα ἐπὶ προσώπου τῆς γῆς ἔσονται καὶ τοῖς θηρίοις τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῖς πετεινοῖς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐν μαχαίρᾳ πεσοῦνται καὶ ἐν λιμῷ συντελεσθήσονται 5 τάδε λέγει κύριος μὴ εἰσέλθῃς εἰς θίασον αὐτῶν καὶ μὴ πορευθῇς τοῦ κόψασθαι καὶ μὴ πενθήσῃς αὐτούς ὅτι ἀφέστακα τὴν εἰρήνην μου ἀπὸ τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου 6 οὐ μὴ κόψωνται αὐτοὺς οὐδὲ ἐντομίδας οὐ μὴ ποιήσωσιν καὶ οὐ ξυρήσονται 7 καὶ οὐ μὴ κλασθῇ ἄρτος ἐν πένθει αὐτῶν εἰς παράκλησιν ἐπὶ τεθνηκότι οὐ ποτιοῦσιν αὐτὸν ποτήριον εἰς παράκλησιν ἐπὶ πατρὶ καὶ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ 8 εἰς οἰκίαν πότου οὐκ εἰσελεύσῃ συγκαθίσαι με{T'} αὐτῶν τοῦ φαγεῖν καὶ πιεῖν 9 διότι τάδε λέγει κύριος ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ καταλύω ἐκ τοῦ τόπου τούτου ἐνώπιον τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν ὑμῶν καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ὑμῶν φωνὴν χαρᾶς καὶ φωνὴν εὐφροσύνης φωνὴν νυμφίου καὶ φωνὴν νύμφης 1 The Lord’s word came to me: 2 With such a land for thy dwelling-place, neither wive nor gender; 3 for sons and daughters born in this land, for mothers who there gave them birth and fathers who begot them, the Lord has ill news to hear. 4 Die they of the plague, they shall lie like dung on the ground, unwept, unburied; meet they their end by sword or famine, birds in air and beasts that roam the earth shall prey on the carrion of them. 5 Where they hold wake for the dead, such is the Lord’s bidding, never enter thou, condole and console thou never; friendship of mine this people shall never have, nor grace, nor mercy, the Lord says. 6 Die rich, die poor in that country of theirs, burial and wake they shall have none; never a limb gashed or a head shaved to honour them; 7 none shall break bread with the mourner, nor give him a draught of wine for his comfort, though father or mother he bewail. 8 Nor enter thou where men feast, to sit at meat and drink with them; 9 this doom he utters, the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You shall live to see the day when cries of joy and mirth, voice of bridegroom and of bride, in this land are heard no more.

4
Mortibus ægrotationum morientur:
non plangentur, et non sepelientur:
in sterquilinium super faciem terræ erunt,
et gladio et fame consumentur:
et erit cadaver eorum in escam volatilibus cæli et bestiis terræ.
5
Hæc enim dicit Dominus:
Ne ingrediaris domum convivii,
neque vadas ad plangendum,
neque consoleris eos,
quia abstuli pacem meam a populo isto, dicit Dominus,
misericordiam et miserationes.
6
Et morientur grandes et parvi in terra ista:
non sepelientur, neque plangentur,
et non se incident,
neque calvitium fiet pro eis.
7
Et non frangent inter eos lugenti panem
ad consolandum super mortuo,
et non dabunt eis potum calicis
ad consolandum super patre suo et matre.
8
9
Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël:
Ecce ego auferam de loco isto,
in oculis vestris, et in diebus vestris,
vocem gaudii et vocem lætitiæ,
vocem sponsi et vocem sponsæ.
10 καὶ ἔσται ὅταν ἀναγγείλῃς τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ ἅπαντα τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα καὶ εἴπωσιν πρὸς σέ διὰ τί ἐλάλησεν κύριος ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς πάντα τὰ κακὰ ταῦτα τίς ἡ ἀδικία ἡμῶν καὶ τίς ἡ ἁμαρτία ἡμῶν ἣν ἡμάρτομεν ἔναντι κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν 11 καὶ ἐρεῖς αὐτοῖς ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἐγκατέλιπόν με οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν λέγει κύριος καὶ ᾤχοντο ὀπίσω θεῶν ἀλλοτρίων καὶ ἐδούλευσαν αὐτοῖς καὶ προσεκύνησαν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐμὲ ἐγκατέλιπον καὶ τὸν νόμον μου οὐκ ἐφυλάξαντο 12 καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐπονηρεύσασθε ὑπὲρ τοὺς πατέρας ὑμῶν καὶ ἰδοὺ ὑμεῖς πορεύεσθε ἕκαστος ὀπίσω τῶν ἀρεστῶν τῆς καρδίας ὑμῶν τῆς πονηρᾶς τοῦ μὴ ὑπακούειν μου 13 καὶ ἀπορρίψω ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ταύτης εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν οὐκ ᾔδειτε ὑμεῖς καὶ οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν καὶ δουλεύσετε ἐκεῖ θεοῖς ἑτέροις οἳ οὐ δώσουσιν ὑμῖν ἔλεος 14 διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἡμέραι ἔρχονται λέγει κύριος καὶ οὐκ ἐροῦσιν ἔτι ζῇ κύριος ὁ ἀναγαγὼν τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου 15 ἀλλά ζῇ κύριος ὃς ἀνήγαγεν τὸν οἶκον Ισραηλ ἀπὸ γῆς βορρᾶ καὶ ἀπὸ πασῶν τῶν χωρῶν οὗ ἐξώσθησαν ἐκεῖ καὶ ἀποκαταστήσω αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν γῆν αὐτῶν ἣν ἔδωκα τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν 16 ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω τοὺς ἁλεεῖς τοὺς πολλούς λέγει κύριος καὶ ἁλιεύσουσιν αὐτούς καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἀποστελῶ τοὺς πολλοὺς θηρευτάς καὶ θηρεύσουσιν αὐτοὺς ἐπάνω παντὸς ὄρους καὶ ἐπάνω παντὸς βουνοῦ καὶ ἐκ τῶν τρυμαλιῶν τῶν πετρῶν 17 ὅτι οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου ἐπὶ πάσας τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ οὐκ ἐκρύβη τὰ ἀδικήματα αὐτῶν ἀπέναντι τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν μου 18 καὶ ἀνταποδώσω διπλᾶς τὰς ἀδικίας αὐτῶν καὶ τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν ἐ{F'} αἷς ἐβεβήλωσαν τὴν γῆν μου ἐν τοῖς θνησιμαίοις τῶν βδελυγμάτων αὐτῶν καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἀνομίαις αὐτῶν ἐν αἷς ἐπλημμέλησαν τὴν κληρονομίαν μου 10 This warning uttered, if they ask thee why the divine sentence is so stern, wherein their guilt lies, what wrong they have done to the Lord their God, 11 tell them this in his name: It is because your fathers have forsaken me, had recourse to alien gods, and submitted to the worship of them, my claim renounced, my laws defied. 12 And you have out-done your fathers in malice, each of you following the ill bent of his own heart, and disobeying me. 13 Exiles far from home, in a land neither you nor those fathers of yours ever saw, you shall spend day and night in the service of alien gods, without respite. 14 (Ay, the Lord says, a time is coming when the living Lord men swear by will no longer be the God who rescued Israel from Egypt; 15 the living God will be one who has rescued Israel from the north country, and all the places of exile that are now designed for you, restoring them to the home which was once his gift to their fathers.[1]) 16 Many fishermen I have, the Lord says, to spread the nets for them; and after that many huntsmen, to hunt them down among mountains and hill-sides and rocky caverns. 17 Good watch I keep on their doings, never lose sight of them; no guilt of theirs can escape my scrutiny. 18 Twice over they shall pay for guilt of theirs, misdoing of theirs, the men that have profaned my own land with dead idols, spread pollution through all my domain. 10
11
dices ad eos:
Quia dereliquerunt me patres vestri, ait Dominus,
13
14
Propterea ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus,
16
Ecce ego mittam piscatores multos, dicit Dominus,
17
Quia oculi mei super omnes vias eorum:
18
Et reddam primum duplices iniquitates et peccata eorum,
quia contaminaverunt terram meam in morticinis idolorum suorum,
et abominationibus suis impleverunt hæreditatem meam.
19 κύριε ἰσχύς μου καὶ βοήθειά μου καὶ καταφυγή μου ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κακῶν πρὸς σὲ ἔθνη ἥξουσιν ἀ{P'} ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς καὶ ἐροῦσιν ὡς ψευδῆ ἐκτήσαντο οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν εἴδωλα καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτοῖς ὠφέλημα 20 εἰ ποιήσει ἑαυτῷ ἄνθρωπος θεούς καὶ οὗτοι οὔκ εἰσιν θεοί 19 Strength and stronghold, Lord, refuge in time of peril, shall not the Gentiles themselves come to thee from the ends of the earth, confessing that all their patrimony is but a heritage of lies, that their idols cannot avail them? 20 Shall men make gods for themselves, that gods in truth are none? 19
Vere mendacium possederunt patres nostri,
vanitatem quæ eis non profuit.
20
Numquid faciet sibi homo deos,
et ipsi non sunt dii?
21 διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ δηλώσω αὐτοῖς ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τούτῳ τὴν χεῖρά μου καὶ γνωριῶ αὐτοῖς τὴν δύναμίν μου καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ὄνομά μοι κύριος 21 Ay, it is the very lesson I mean to teach them now; that I act, and act with power; they shall learn to know the Lord’s name at last. 21
Idcirco ecce ego ostendam eis per vicem hanc,
ostendam eis manum meam, et virtutem meam,
et scient quia nomen mihi Dominus.
